The Conservatorie moisturizer and two phased makeup remover

Both of them have a sophisticated, barely-there scent - these products have an expensive feel to them.
These two arrived during my trip and I have been trying them out ever since. I like them both though it took me some time to get used to the makeup remover - usually I just use moist microfiber cloth for removing my makeup. I even got myself an ordinary liquid foundation, so I could test it under different circumstances as well - other stuff is much more clingy.

pic taken end of October amongst the moss in mum's garden
I found the moisturizer very light, easily absorbable and moisturizing. Works well with my mineral foundations and leaves no icky film on the skin. It has a very discreet, almost unnoticeable pleasant scent. Even my mother commented on the "lack of smell" as she put it :). It's  as light and pleasant as my Dr.Scheller creams and it definitely has one advantage - when I rub my Dr.Scheller moisturizer a tad too much, it starts to roll on my skin - this one does not.

This is not a winter cream - it's too light but it's perfect for the rest of the year (I need to ask The Conservatorie whether it also has SPF or not... would be nice for summer). I have been using the cream all this time and am almost out of it by now. It's good, main ingredients are glycerin and coconut oil.  You can see the ingredients list when you click on the above picture - it'll become larger. The cream jar is made of glass and looks and feels elegant, has one of those protective caps too - comes in handy when traveling.

The makeup remover is a two phased one - this explains the different colored liquids in the picture above - it needs to be shaken before use. Basically it's a cleaning substance and an oily substance - oil loosens the dirt from the skin and hydrates it a bit while the cleaning substance makes sure all the dirt gets off the face.
According to The Conservatorie this product is also suitable for eye makeup removal but I am a bit skeptical about that: when removing mascara traces under my eyes I felt tingling in the eyes and therefore decided not to use it for eyes. rest of my face had no objections :).

Makeup remover smells pleasant - a bit like strawberries actually - and leaves the skin nicely hydrated. I do not feel the need to grab for my moisturizer/jojoba oil like I usually do after the microfiber/water cleansing. The bottle is quite big and although I sometimes forget to use it, I have only managed to use up 1/3 of the bottle so far. Since I usually do not use makeup removers I cannot compare this to other brands.

PS! The cream is sold at the Private Label website only and is currently priced at $9,50. Makeup remover is $9,95 on the original website. Prices are the same as in drugstores for the usual generic moisturizers and makeup removers but I think it's a good price for a quality product. Should the moisturizer have a nice SPF as well, I just might consider getting a new one for spring - it feels very nice on the skin.

Sunday, August 7

Took a tiny trip last week - spent some time in the countryside and enjoyed myself - these were the few selected playmates I chose to accompany me::
the unrecognizable mascara is Lumene Natural Code something...
Travelling is excellent if one has to test some products - there is no possibility to stray from the chosen path: this time I took Lucy Minerals foundation samples with me and wore different one each day (forced my mum wear the darker ones...). Creamy, nice coverage and nice durability. Pale Olive is still the one I favor most. Does it look too pale on me?
Mum looked quite nice in Light Medium but she still complained it was too light... On wrinkly skin MMU will need some added dewyness - a light spray with some skin freshener would be very nice. Perhaps I applied too much foundation on mum's skin but it looked somewhat heavy on her... :S sry no pic.

The cheap Russian moisturizer (Чистая Линия Фитоформула) needs some more time to be judged properly - so far it seems a nice liquid-y and well absorbing product, leaves skin nice and smooth (I liked the ingredients list (although with parabens) and the price, which was some 2,5 eur). Scent is also slightly herbal and very faint.

It's the sunscreen that gave me most trouble - Garnier Ambre Solaire Rapido for kids SPF 50 in spray bottle was terribly greasy. Stubbornly refused to absorb into my skin and stained my poor powder brush something terrible - it was almost soaking oil after this week and yearned for a wash. I was very sorry I did not pack my silica microspheres with me during this trip - I would have needed all that sucking power...
after sauna and wearing Lucy Minerals Cream
bare minimum for Sunday...
Also I'd like to note, that sauna has wonderful effect on skin - all the flakiness disappeared as if by magic and skin looked marvelous the next day (except for a couple of pimples on the neck but those heal slowly anyway). While mechanical scrubbing rips the upper layers of dead skin away, sauna melts them off - basically you sweat your skin clean and all the dirt and old skin comes of when rinsing. No hard scrubbing will be necessary, the result will be even and smooth.
before sauna

NYX jumbo eye pencil Milk is great eyeshadow base (minimal if any creasing) and I can easily wear it as a lower liner on the waterline - but the blinding pure whiteness of it disturbs me a bit - I'd prefer something light but a bit more skin colored there - must continue my search. Milk will still be used and loved but I'd like something not quite as 60s for everyday wear.

A bowl of some kind has always a role to play in my makeup routine - I cannot easily apply my foundation without it. I sprinkle some mineral foundation in a small (smooth and round-bottomed) bowl and use it to load my brush evenly with powder - I dislike using the lids of the jars since it's so messy and unhygienic. Alas when I travel - my trustee (grandma's christal) bowl stays behind. But there's always something that helps me out - this time it was the lid of an old teapot. I asked mum to keep it for me for my next visit - it was very comfortable to use (perfect curve and smooth surface).
perfect design for mineral foundation application - for loading the brush
When looking around for a nice small mixing bowl or plate , either for home use or travelling - before heading out shopping  do have a thorough peek at your own cupboards - you might be surprised how many suitable utensils you might find. :)

And something I also picked up from Saaremaa - there are some dolomite mines there, dolomite is basically poor man's marble. This little jar and it's lid are carved from one single block. They are sold as souvenirs :) (7 EUR a piece).

EOTD Smashbox Viewfinder trio

Anja, a very nice person from Denmark, sent me some makeup samples and stuff she herself is not using - thank you, Anja! So today I used the MAC C1 sample (I have to find out, which formula) and her Smashbox eyeshadow palette Viewfinder
I am also trying out Bella Pierre's moisturizer, which smells like Orto's (a very old Estonian brand) cucumber cream. Ingredients seem to be those of an ordinary moisturizer: Aqua (Deionized Water), Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Polysorbate-60, PEG-150, Glyceryl Stearate, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Triethanolamine, Disodium EDTA, Titanium Dioxide CI 77891, Parfum (Fragrance), Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A). Traditional and safe, works well during winter.

MAC's foundation seems to be a bit orange, there's quite a noticeable tone difference between face and neck:
Smashbox's eyeshadow trio is subdued and very usable although I cannot see myself using the pink tone much - it disappears on my lids but manages to leave the eyes look tired. I use it very little, just to blend out the dark color and the gorgeous highlighting color. Highlighter is very nice - subtle sheen and glow, nothing too extravagant. I used the same tone under the eyes too. The dark cool brown in the palette reminds me of very dark dirty gold, a matte brown with plenty of golden hilites mixed into it.
I wanted to test the coverage of the MAC foundation and did not use any additional concealment - reddishness on the cheeks is well visible.
Pics taken in daylight, after application. By 5pm there's some creasing (used Manhattan's eyeshadow primer).

Dr.Scheller's moisturizer with argan oil & amaranth

Since the old cream (on the right) is almost done with got myself a new one (left). I only buy these on sale (which occurs almost monthly in my local supermarket - thank you, Selver). Dr.Scheller's products are from Germany, have all kinds of different nature cosmetics certificates and have won all sorts of awards. This time I got the Pomegranate facial toner and their most expensive anti-wrinkle day cream with amaranth and argan oil.
First impression on the cream was, well, that the scent is not as pleasant as the previous one (thistle and chiaseeds) had. Both creams are day creams and therefore a bit light in consistency. I could not use them (for going outside) during winter on the really cold days. Since the autumn is long, wet and mostly warm (warm to a northerner means above 0C), it'll do great for autumn. For cold times during the winter I shall revert back to trusted Dr. Hauschka.

I could not decide which one to get: the anti-aging creme with amaranth and argan oil or the anti-mimic wrinkles cream with blackcurrant and marula, the latter smells delicious but was not on sale at the time.
Ingredients are natural, texture is nice and smell, well ok, could be better but still, it's ok. The facial toner on the other hand smells great and seems to work great too. After using it my pores sure seem to shrink if judged my the feeling on my skin (contains alcochol).

Ingredients for the cream: Aqua, Glycerin, Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil*. Glycine Soja Oil*, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil*, Hydrogenetad Coconut Oil, Decyl Oleate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Squalane, Cetearyl Glucoside, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil*, Spilanthes Acmella Flower Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Alcohol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid, Parfum, Limonene**, Citral**,  Linalool**, Geraniol**, Citronellol**, Coumarin**.

See peaks olema kalleim kreem dr.Schelleri valikus. Vaatasin samal ajal ka poes mustasõstra ning marula miimikakortsude vastast kreemi kuid kuna too ei olnud parasjagu soodusmüügis, jätsin tolle riiulile järgmiseks korraks.
Kreem on mõnusa vedela struktuuriga kuid selle lõhn võib inimesele, kes pole taimsete toodetega eriti harjunud, veidi vastu käia. Mustasõstrakreem oli palju parema lõhnaga. Kreem imendub kiiresti ja sobib seetõttu hästi mineraalpuudri alla niisutajaks.
Ma alati vingun, et Dr. Schelleri kreemid pole talveks piisavalt rasvased - ja alles nüüd koitis mulle, et ma olen ju alati päevakreemid valinud. Mine tea - võibolla oleks just see rasvasem öökreem meie külmemapoolsetel talvepäevadel heaks päevakreemiks?

EOTD Next to Nothing and a bath-story

I spent some time by myself this morning, had a tiny aromatherapy spa. Put castor oil on eye lashes and roots of my hair, grape seed oil on the face and hair ends, added some ordinary seasalt and a tiny touch of fresh coriander (I love this scent) to the bathwater and had a long relaxing bath. Later scrubbed the face with baking soda and warned the cellulite off my thighs with the help a big scratchy glove. Bliss! I love baths, so much more pleasureable then showers. It was so worth it although I had to shampoo twice to get all the oil out of my hair but it evens out since after oil treatments my hair has no need for a conditioner. Really, almost any oil will do for one's hair but I use the cheaper ones like grape seed or olive oil. It's so easy to have a spa in ones own home, most of the stuff is just sitting there in the fridge or kitchen cabinets. The only things missing are a manicurist and a foot massage. :D
Water one uses makes a huge difference. In the country my hair dos not get as greasy as fast as it does in the city. Tallinn is built on limestone and so is also our water reservoir, lake Ülemiste. This means very harsh water which is hard on hair (oilyness, dandruff), skin (dries it up, becomes flaky, especially in the winter) and household appliances. My hair feels so very different when I have bathed in a bog lake, silky smooth and shiny, makes me want to bring some of that soft water home in huge canisters. Rainwater is also splendid for ones hair. Sometimes it's recommended to put some vinegar in the rinsing water just to achieve the same soft result. I don't know about you but I think vinegar does not smell very nice.
After bath covered myself with jojoba oil from face to foot and pondered about todays look. Came up with this:

Colors used are:
E.L.F.'s mineral eyeshadow primer (yeah, it's the stinky one)
EDM's Olive Fair in o-glo all over the eyelid and on the browbone as base, also used as foundation all over the face;
E.L.F.'s cream eyeliner in brown on upper lashline topped with The Conservatorie's Brown Cocoa;
MoonStone in the crease and lower lashline;
Satin White applied very lightly on the browbone and inner corners;
EDM's Fairly Light Neutral o-glo for contouring the cheekbones;
whatever was on the blush brush as blush (I suspect Scorpio the Eight mixed with a touch of Garnet);
E.L.F.'s eyelash curler (for one dollar - an amazing find);
Lumene Natural Code "eye dramatizer" mascara in black (a very good find, although not waterproof, will not budge from it's place during a day's wear; looks nice and sleek too);
Slight touch-up of the eyebrows with E.L.F.'s "feather proof" brown eyeliner pencil;
E.L.F.'s mineral lipstick in Rosy Raisin as the finishing touch (gone in an hour as usual, lipsticks do not stay on me :S).

And here's a pic of all the stuff itself (quite a pile, is it not?).

New moisturizer: Dr. Scheller's Skin-Relaxing Day Cream

Eile Selveris konnates jäi silma „Kõik kreemid -20%“ sildike niiet niisutava päevakreemi probleem mõneks ajaks jälle lahendatud. Seekord võtsin kuivale nahale mõeldud ohaka ja õlisalvei (Salvia Hispanica Chia seeds) sarjast. Seal on 2 erinevat päevakreemi, üks kuivale ja teine ülikuivale nahale. Viimane oleks talvel hea olnud, suveks-kevadeks tundus liiga rasvase konsistentsiga. ;)

Bought a new moisturizer. I quite like Dr.Scheller's stuff (aced lots of blind tests - their wrinkle cream is supposedly amazing; also have the BDIH certificate (certified organic cosmetics)), this time I took the one meant for dry skin containing the extracts of thistle and chia seeds (Salvia Hispanica). The product has nice consistency and a pleasant, faint aroma. Note that this series has two day creams, one for dry skin and the second for extremely dry skin. Here's the complete list of ingredients (copied from this webpage) of the creme I bought:

Aqua, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Shorea Stenoptera Seed Butter, Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil, Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Mangifera Indica Seed Oil, Cetearyl Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Tocopherol, Salvia Hispanica Seed Extract, Lecithin, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Ascorbic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Alcohol, Citric Acid, Parfum, Linalool, Geraniol.

Price: whooping 10 Euros, 13 USD or 154 EEK.

Ever heard of stuff called Vahar?

Well neither had I. Apparently it's mostly propolis (strong antibiotic properties), beeswax and pollen (beebread?) mixed with oil (usually sunflower oil). Saleslady swore it's good for herpes and  it makes the starting herpes go away in 3 hrs or so - if one applies the cream every 20 minutes. Also recommended for cold sores and extra dry skin. We'll see, at least it smells nice - like honey - and there's no preservatives etc in it. It's made by a couple who keep a bee farm somewhere in Põlva county. Small jar for 50 EEK~ 3,3 EUR.

PS! Delfi naistekas oli juttu, et vaha põhjustab pooride ummistumist - mul pole punne juurde tulnud. Ju propolis tasakaalustab.

In an Estonian beauty forum it was told that beeswax causes pores to clog up - so far I have not noticed. But I do think that all people allergic to honey should keep away from Vahar.

Skin during winter

It was -15 degrees Celcius this morning, quite cold. I wrap myself in my scarf but still the cold gets through - especially the skin around the eyes looks like crap. As I step through the door I look as if suffering from a serious skin condition - red patches under the eyes.

Unfortunately I forgot to take a FOTD but - there's still time tomorrow. Skin suffers a lot right now - needs special heavy creams in the evening (got a tester of Dr. Hauschka's quince cream just for this, the rose cream was already sold out) and careful moisturization, gets flaky otherwise. Oil cleansing method is the way to go right now - no soaps whatsoever allowed. And absolutely no water on the face in the morning! The skin's own sebum is the best thing for skin when it's this cold outside, all cleansing procedures must be kept for the evening.

The cold wave is here to stay until Christmas at least. The good thing is - it's not cloudy! We can actually see the Sun!

PS! I am aware that I do not use the Dr. Hauschka products as they were intended - Hauschka's entire skin care routine is exactly the opposite - the cream should be applied in the morning and no products used when going to bed...

Dr. Scheller's new moisturizer for sensitive skin

Why I like Apotheker Scheller's/Dr. Schellers (from 2009) stuff:

1. it's cheap (ca 140EEK/USD13 for 50ml)
2. the ingredients list does not make my hair stand up
3. seems to work too.

Here's the ingredients list:
Aqua, Glycerin, Helianthus Annuus (päevalill) Seed Oil*, Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (sheavõi)*, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Decyl Oleate, Hydrogenated Coconut Oil (hüdrogeenitud kookosõli), Hydrogenated Palm Oil (hüdrogeenitud palmiõli), Shorea Stenoptera Seed Butter (soorea, Malaisia taim), Silica, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Squalane, Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) Seed Oil*, Xanthan Gum, Schizandra Sphenanthera (talbjas sidrunväändik, ravimtaim Lõuna-Hiina aladelt) Fruit Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Gossypium Herbaceum (rohtne puuvillapõõsas) Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Tocopherol, Kaolin, Gellan Gum, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Lecithin, Citric Acid, Ceramide 3, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Ascorbic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Titanium Dioxide.
*) ingredients from certified organic agriculture

This new formula is replacing the old one which I also liked (uus toode vahetas välja vana, mida nüüd enam ei toodeta).

The old ingredients list (no longer available, discontinued):
Aqua, Glycine Soja, Pentylene Glycol, Buxus Chinensis (jojoba), Olea Europaea (oliivõli), Squalane, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butyrospermum Parkii (sheavõi), Panthenol, Camelia Oleifera (rohelise tee ekstrakt), Algae, Fucus Vesiculosus (peaks vist põisadru olema), Sodium Carboxymethyl Betaglucan, Ceramide 3, Sodium Hyaluronate, Silica, Kaolin, Sodium Carbomer, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid, Silver Chloride

Sakslased on suhteliselt suured looduskosmeetikahullud ning nende looduskosmeetikatootjad võtavad asja kaunis tõsiselt. Dr. Schelleri toodetav kraam vastab BDIH-standardile, mille põhimõtted on kirjas siin. Ei sisalda mineraalõli derivaate ega sünteetilisi lõhnaaineid.

Germans are pretty heavily into organic cosmetics and Dr. Scheller answers their needs: it has the BDIH-certificate, which is given to cosmetics that comlpy with these requirements.

Glütseriin on vist süüdi. Tuleb uus niisutav kreem otsida. (too oily)

Järgmisena Weleda saialille-hoolduspiim. Andmebaasi järgi võivad need looduslikud koostisosad põhjustada allergilisi reaktsioone kuid midagi eriti jälki ei tundu sisaldavat.
Hilisem lisandus: ostsin, proovisin - ei imendu, jääb väga õline (öökremina peale kandes saab veel hommikul seda õli vatiga maha nühkida)... tuleb järgmisena testida geeljaid, mitte õli baasil tehtud niisutajaid. Lähen küsin loodustoodete poest kreemide testreid, enam põrsast kotis küll ei osta. (omg, oily)

(the best eye makeup remover)

(excellent, quickly absorbed by the skin but fiendishly expensive)

I now have a new friend, smells (strongly) like vanilla and feels great on the skin: Joik's goat milk based luxurious body lotion. So far so good. Unfortunately their homepage is in Estonian only... :S

I'd love to promote their stuff in other forums too, I am so pleased.

Bought another Joik product - face cleansing oil. Perfect during the winter. Contains only natural oils and comes with 2 sponges.
It is applied all over the face on the makeup, massaged gently and then rinsed off using the sponges
soaked in hot water. There is a separate product for removing eye makeup, that's a little gentler and more moisturizing.
Sometimes I use it as the morning moisturizer too - as the weather outside is something between -3 and -12 degrees I cannot possibly use the water-based goat milk moisturizer.
